My kids always have fun painting, so when I heard about painting with shaving cream I knew that we had to give it a try. This easy, fun and kid-approved project is a unique way to create painted designs that are perfect for greeting cards, scrap-booking, or any creative use you can come up with.
Supplies Needed:
- Shaving cream
- Food coloring, acrylic paints, alcohol inks or any liquid paint
- Heavy paper
- Sheet pan, plate or any non-porous work surface
- Paper plates
- Paper towels
- Ruler
- Toothpicks, chop sticks or dowels
- Spatula
How to Paint With Shaving Cream
- Spray shaving cream into a sheet pan
- Use a ruler or tip of spatula to spread shaving cream into pan to flatten it out
- Add random drops of paint, ink or food coloring
- Use a dowel or other tool to mix the paint with the shaving cream. It works better if you keep the stick straight as it moves through the cream
- Place paper over shaving cream and press down lightly
- Lift paper gently by one corner and then place onto a paper plate, counter or other work surface
- Use a spatula to scrape the shaving cream off of the paper
The beauty about this craft is that you can’t go wrong. If you over mix the colors, which my daughter loved to do, you just end-up with less definition in the patterns. And we were able to reuse the shaving cream one time too. So we mixed one batch and then added more paint to make a second batch.
Tips:
Play around with different paints and paper. Next time I think I’ll try it on a glossy paper. I’d also like to try it with fabric. How pretty would it be to make a fabric wrapped picture frame to give as a gift? Also, depending upon what type of paint you use, you may want to wear gloves. We used Liquid Artists Acrylic Inks and high flow Acrylic Assorted Color Set which were easy to use for my daughter and didn’t get us messy. You can also use stencils and cut-outs to help make different designs with the paint.
I hope you have as much fun painting with shaving cream as my daughter and I did! Here are a few examples of her masterpieces!
